Cancer therapies and red flags for dental treatment- managing patients with complex medical histories [ASE member: in person]
Dr Sophie Beaumont (OAM)

Dr Sophie Beaumont is a dental practitioner with more than 25 years’ experience working in both the private and public dental sectors. Having completed a Master of Public Health in 2004, Dr Beaumont’s passion for public dental care grew exponentially. She has worked in Community Dental Clinics and the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne in several departments including the Oral Medicine specialist clinic. Dr Beaumont has a particular interest in orofacial pain and temporomandibular disorders.
In 2018, Dr Beaumont was appointed head of Dental Oncology at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and completed a Masters of Cancer Sciences in 2021. She has received a Medal (OAM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2023 for services to dentistry. Dr Beaumont is passionate about achieving equity in oral healthcare especially for patients undergoing cancer treatment.
Dr Beaumont is co-founder of the SugarFree Smiles initiative. She is also founding Director and Secretary of the Yarta Foundation Australia, established in 2008 to provide disadvantaged children in India the opportunity to access quality education.
Lecture Synopsis
We all know the importance of taking a comprehensive medical history, so why is cancer any different? This presentation will cover some of the key cancer therapies and how they might pose particular challenges with providing dental and endodontic treatment. A discussion about head and neck surgery and radiotherapy, chemotherapy and emerging new treatments such including immunotherapy, targeted agents and medications that have been implicated with osteonecrosis, will be covered. Some specific complications from each of these treatments along with case presentations to highlight the complexity of cancer, will also be presented.
